Foundation in Batticaloa

The Home in Batticaloa was established under St. Joseph’s guidance, initiated by Bishop Ignatius Glennie of the Trincomalee-Batticaloa Diocese. In December 1954, the Little Sisters arrived by train from Colombo and were welcomed by Rev. Vandenbuche, sj. Initially, they were accommodated in a small two-room house while the main building was under construction. Bishop Glennie blessed and laid the foundation stone, with the first elderly resident welcomed on Christmas Eve 1954. The building was completed by 1962, and the official opening featured a procession led by Parish Priest Fr. George Wambeek. Parishioners celebrated with firecrackers and pledged support, contributing Rs.31 during the event. Over time, 13 Little Sisters cared for 110 impoverished elderly individuals, aided by volunteers. The home has faced numerous challenges, including a destructive cyclone in 1978 and ongoing ethnic conflict since 1983, offering refuge to the elderly and those affected by violence.
