Celebrating 100 years: An interview with Sr.MaryAnn Joseph originally from Christ the King Parish

  1. Sister, you were born in this church. Can you share some of your earliest memories of growing up here?                                                                                                                                                                   I was baptized here at Christ the King Parish. Some of my earliest memories are of going to Mass with my family, singing in the choir, and being part of the youth group. I still remember how, every Chinese New Year, the whole family would sit together in the same pew. This is one of my sweet memories of SP church. I also made many friends through youth gatherings and catechism classes.
  1. How has being born and raised in this church shaped your faith and vocation?                                 Christ the King Parish was the soil where my vocation took root. Through the youth group, I discovered a love for service—especially during a visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor, which my sister helped organize for the youth. Those experiences opened my heart to the needs of others. I was also part of a group of young people who spent time with Fr. Maiccal Sinnappan. We had many conversations, including about our vocations. From this small group, one joined the priesthood and two joined religious life.
  2. What does it mean to you to be celebrating this milestone anniversary as someone who has deep roots in this parish?                                                                                                                                                    It’s really moving to be part of this 100th year celebration. Christ the King Parish has always been more than a church building for me; it has been a home. Celebrating this jubilee reminds me of all the people who helped build and sustain this community over the years. It’s a great joy to be with them and celebrate God’s faithfulness together.
  1. What are some of your favorite memories of this church over the years?                                            There are so many beautiful memories, but one stands out clearly. Our church building was burned by some extremist from outside not too long after the September 11 attack in US. I saw how so many parishioners young and old, men and women, came to watch the church throughout the night for couple of weeks. An unwanted and sad event took place to our church, but this event has brought so many people to work together to protect our church from a second attack. It was so heart touching.
  2. What message would you like to share with the congregation as we celebrate this anniversary?        Let’s be proud of the faith we’ve received—and generous in sharing it. Christ the King Parish didn’t grow by chance, but through the prayer, love, and dedication of many before us. As we celebrate this Jubilee, may we never take for granted the gift of this community. Let’s continue to be a place of welcome, service, and faith—a light for others, now and for generations to come.

A blessed Jubilee to all!
