Summary of the Relief Initiative at Katana, Negombo, Sri Lanka
Following the devastation caused by the Ditwa cyclone and severe flooding, the Little Sisters of the Poor, Colombo, and the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family, Katana, carried out a collaborative relief mission on December 9, 2025, to support over 100 affected families in Katana, Negombo. Led by Mother Edwina and her team, the initiative combined material assistance with compassionate personal outreach.
The cyclone severely impacted the brick-making community, destroying homes, livelihoods, belongings, and essential documents. In response, the sisters provided freshly cooked meals and distributed dry ration kits containing food supplies, clothing, bed linen, cleaning materials, medicines, and clean drinking water to help families survive the immediate aftermath.
A defining feature of the mission was the team’s home-to-home visits. The sisters listened to survivors’ stories, offered comfort, prayers, and reassurance, and built strong personal connections that restored dignity and hope. Special attention was given to children affected by fear, loss of school materials, and disrupted education, as well as to elderly and vulnerable individuals needing medical support.
Through careful observation and dialogue, the team assessed ongoing needs such as healthcare, trauma support, and documentation issues related to government aid. Beyond emergency relief, the initiative fostered trust and solidarity within the community, leaving families with renewed hope. The effort stood as a powerful expression of compassion, human connection, and commitment to long-term recovery for the people of Katana.
