Foundation in Colombo

On November 18, 1888, Seven Little Sisters departed from France aboard the SS Oxus, arriving in Colombo on December 7, 1888. The parish priest of Pettah Church met the Little Sisters at the dock and took them to St Lucia’s Cathedral but were told that Bishop Christopher Bonjean was waiting for them at their ‘new home’. Upon their arrival, they were gladdened by the hearty welcome by His Grace and the very Rev. Fr Collin who accompanied them. The Little Sisters were introduced to the various existing religious communities in Colombo and were warmly welcomed by everyone. Mr. John Asphar, a Maltese merchant, sponsored their fares, upkeep, and rent for the first year. The number of elderly individuals they cared for grew beyond forty, prompting the need for a larger facility. By 1894, 10 Little Sisters cared for 60 elderly individuals of diverse backgrounds. Currently, the home in Colombo accommodates 80 elderly residents and has been reconstructed in 2004. The community comprises 15 Sisters, supported by volunteers and paid workers. The Sisters continue their mission with reliance on divine providence and assistance from various benefactors, preserving the work initiated 125 years ago.
